Ohio ends drought at Akron with 19-7 win

Steady defense and a big special teams play led Ohio to a 19-7 win over Akron at Infocision Stadium Saturday night. It was the first win for the Bobcats (4-2, 2-0 MAC) at Akron since 1997 and the first time they've started MAC play 2-0 since 1999. The Bobcat defense limited the Zips (1-4, 0-2) to one score and forced five turnovers.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the first half. Ohio was able to turn its first offensive possession into a 27-yard Matt Weller field goal. Akron threatened just before halftime but quarterback Matt Rodgers fumbled into the end zone and the half ended with the Bobcats leading 3-0.

Ohio stumbles in opener vs. UConn

Ohio had the ingredients to re-create the magic of the 2005 home opener. Record-setting crowd of 24,617. ESPN cameras. Big East opponnent. But this time the Connecticut defense was too much to overcome as the Huskies handed Ohio a 23-16 loss. That Connecticut D, the nation's 4th-best a year ago, held the Bobcats to 61 yards rushing while recording 3 sacks and a safety.

Meanwhile, the UConn offense was able to gash the Bobcats defense for 259 rushing yards. Husking running backs Jordan Todman (25 carries for 157 yards) and Andre Dixon (19 for 100) topped the 100-yard rushing mark. Huskie QB Zach Frazer was a shaky 11-for-24 for 127 yards with three interceptions but did throw for two scores.

Jayson White's first career touchdown helps lead Ohio to its third straight win over Miami.
The Ohio Bobcats’ 2008 season did not live up to many people's expectations, as the squad experienced a two-win decrease from a year ago. However, the team did something in the season’s final two weeks that it struggled with during the first ten—finish.

Ohio (4-8, 3-5 MAC) never trailed its biggest rival, the Miami RedHawks, in a 41-26 victory at Yager Stadium Friday afternoon. The ‘Cats have now taken three straight from Miami for the first time since the team won three straight from 1982 to 1984. Ohio also won its second consecutive game in Oxford for the first time in 45 years.

“They’re feeling good right now,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said about his squad in his postgame radio interview. “I’m very proud of what these kids did.”

“We executed it well,” Jackson said of the final offensive play, a play-action fake that worked to perfection. “Chris [Garrett] sold it great, I rolled down and just found David [Carter] in the back of the end zone. It was great.”

“A lot of key plays on that particular drive,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said in his... <Read More>

Falcons roll over reeling Bobcats

(Edited at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 to add the time for the Ohio-Akron game on Nov. 22. The kickoff time is set for 3:30 p.m., according to Jason Corriher of the Ohio University Media Relations office.)

Judging by the players, the coaches, the fans and the standings after Saturday’s 28-3 loss to the Bowling Green Falcons at Peden Stadium, the Ohio Bobcats’ season is over, even if two more games loom on the 2008 schedule.

The players performed poorly, the coaches seemed ill-prepared, the fans understandably gave up hope and the ‘Cats claimed sole-possession of the MAC East’s basement during a game that Bowling Green dominated from the get-go.

“I thought we did not do a very good job at times of making plays,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said... <Read More>
